And note that baby and children’s pajamas often have flame-resistant properties that can be damaged by plain soap flakes, so it’s important to wash all PJs in detergent instead, baby or regular. Of course, you’ll also want to wash clothes any time they’re visibly soiled, if not after every wear.
Once you find the right formula, be sure to wash all newborn clothing prior to the first use to remove any possible residue, dirt, or germs on the clothing, says Madden. Defaulting to a “baby detergent” can, for the most part, help guide you to gentler formulas, says Madden. It’s hard to weed through all the options out there, though especially since ingredient lists tend to be lengthy and confusing. These characteristics hold especially true if you know that your baby has eczema or sensitive skin. (The AAP doesn’t recommend pods for houses with children under 6, since they can be mistaken for food.) It’s aIso important to avoid detergents with anti-static and fabric softening properties, since these properties can make the detergent very irritating to skin.
That said, Madden says it’s not a bad idea to wash all household clothing in a fragrance-free, or hypoallergenic, detergent. “Most babies should be able to have their clothes washed in the same loads and detergent as the rest of their family,” says Madden.
